I'm currently looking to upgrade/replace my gaming pc. I built it over time in 2017-2018 buying parts here and there when I found decent deals at the time.
Haven't really looked at pc parts since, so I'm a little bit overwhelmed with all these newer parts.

Current spec info:
  • CPU: Intel i5 8600k
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 (8x2)
  • Motherboard: MSI Z370-A PRO
  • PSU: Not sure, I can check when I get home
  • Storage: Have a few, one m.2 ssd and a samsung evo 500gb and another samsung evo 250gb.

Now the question is, should I simply upgrade my CPU and motherboard for the time being or is it worth it to start fresh with a completely new system?

My GPU still seems to be working just fine, so I'm not really in a rush to upgrade that. I would probably swap to the newest AMD GPU sometimes in 2023.

Ideally I would like to keep it under 2000$ CDN. I do not need OS, no need keyboard/mouse or monitors.

I went ahead and created a quick little build to see what it would look like if I kept my current GPU. https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Vv7PH2
How worth it is it to go from DDR4 to DDR5 and motherboard to AM5? Seems expensive.

Thank you for anyone that will take the time to help me out with this :)
Time to purchase: Will look for Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals on some parts.

Edit: I use this pc for almost strictly gaming. I play a lot of different games. Most recently Warzone 2.0 and D2R but I played Lost Ark, league of legends, etc.

why are you looking to upgrade? tbh your build seems pretty fine unless you're lagging, then it would be a cpu bottleneck most likely judging from your build and not by a ton either
ddr5 IMO not worth.

Nab yourself a Ryzen 5 5600X and a MB to go with it. Keep your current ddr4 ram and upgrade your GPU to AMD next year when you get around to it. That is honestly your most cost effective route for a purely gaming build and will run well for a long time.

Not quite sure tbh, mostly because my setup feels old and want something new and shiny
I do get frame drops in warzone but i'm not even sure if that game would feel great on a better setup lol
If I just upgrade the CPU which one should I go for? wouldn't I also need a new motherboard if I go for a newer CPU?

Makes sense. I'll look into the Ryzen 5.

i would go bigger than a 5600x if you're warzonin'. warzoning is like the worst game for a pc build.. hard on gpu, cpu, and hard drive. i'd upgrade your mobo and cpu and see if that fixed it (reuse everything else, id do a new install of windows though), and then if that isn't enough you can upgrade your gpu. i'd go with am4 series something like 5800x

Warzone is probably temporary but yeah it seems pretty rough to run overall.

How's the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D? I could get a new mobo and just try that route, maybe even get one of those pcie 4.0 ssd for that fresh install and run my games from.

Care to elaborate why the new install of windows is needed?

5800x3d is better for sure but i just cant justify the price gap
yea pcie4 is like 10x faster than your current ssd

just to avoid driver issues generally, and pre-existing issues that you may not even know exist so it helps troubleshooting
you can always try it and then do a new install but when i do new drives i just do new installs to limit the problems you will experience

Makes sense for drivers. I'll keep that in mind.

so if I should go for better than Ryzen 5 5600x and the Ryzen 7 5800x3d is too expensive which one would you recommend?

This error seems to show up for most of the motherboards I pick
