with Win11 requiring new components to use an OS, and Win10 EoL coming this year...
i have some concerns for my family that i hope to have cleared up, as i recommend they switch to a Linux distro.
likely Mint Xfce, as that's what i plan to switch to.

i am not so worried about my own switch, though not very familiar, i'm not completely unfamiliar with Linux distros.
i am trying to setup a flawless experience for my parents who need their machine for 1 very specific program. (QuickBooks)

-my mom has an old edition disc, she hasn't used the "on-line" function of QB as it switched from being a purchasable program , to a live service with quarterly cost.
they are trying to avoid paying this cost, as they have been. so they are avoiding QB on-line.
the QB "discs" are Windows only.

i have already seen that different versions of QB are usable through Wine but, i'm not certain how this would install/run.

-like, is our disc required for use of a Wine's version of QB?
do we just download any version, essentially pirating old versions? (assuming not the case)

-since they already have this program on PC with Win10, will downloading Wine and the proper QB model just generally work as it should?
what if i removed the files completely as i wiped Windows prior to Linux install?

any knowledge would be appreciated, i want to get this sorted before it's Win10 EoL during tax season.

Is your mother dead-set on using QB? There are plenty of similar, free Linux alternatives.

Try running QB install via the disc in WINE and see where it takes you. Alternatively, you can even try installing via Steams Proton, it works for more than just games.

the response is a bit messy.
i've asked this prior to posting and their accountant uses QB. i never really got a solid response on if cross-application would be possible, however, i did get the idea that the accountant was uncomfortable with it.
due to the predatory proprietary nature of Intuit, i wouldn't doubt there being incompatibility issues. (quick search shows hiccups to the process at least)

they will be meeting soon with a new accountant. (this discussion was a can of worms)
they may or may not have different options later.

so, ultimately, i can't give a definitive answer yet. i may just have to test things out myself if it comes to that.

-this topic may be a few months ahead of it's time but, i think relative scenarios will start popping up soon

Did you already check to see if their current PCs are ineligible for a Win 11 upgrade? There are multiple ways to bypass the TPM requirements. I used to install a fresh copy on a hard drive and put it into older machines and it worked just fine

It's dependent on the QB version but supposedly they do not work very well with wine.

If they only need their PC for Quickbooks you could just unplug it from all networks and they'll be fine after End of Support. Or you can set up a segregated Win 10 VM on Linux and show them how to use it

I agree, bypassing W11 requirements is real easy to do and likely the better option, you can even run it unregistered/free.
