Can you tell me why he would use anything other than integrated video on a fucking file server? You are such a moron.

Same reason he thinks getting a "Speed" mouse pad will make him any less worse at gaming.

Because the proc in that server is powerful enough for cloud computing.

Looks good Pen. I ended up building my file server for around 500 USD for the main parts. Unfortunately the RAID controller and disks were more expensive then the rest of the machine. >.>

I know right? Everything excluding the 1.5tb hard drive came to around ~330$. + 110$ for the hard drive = 440$

Not bad though, used my Vista DVD so no need for O/S.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 on it (will use 10.4 when it goes live in like 6 months), since I tried Vista on it and W7RC but both installed super bloody slow. Considering that machine is a 2.5Ghz dual core, it shouldn't have installed that slowly. heh.

Which version of Ubuntu wasn't able to detect the network card?

9.04, apparently it only works with the version AFTER mine :p

I guess my motherboard was too old for them, anyway it works on Vista so I'm not going to bother changing.

Hello my fellow D2jsp Computer Hardware Discussion comrades, I am sorry, but as of late I have kept all but some of you in the dark as to my plans to under go my latest project. Though I have been thinking about under going a project of this magnitude for many weeks, I was only pushed to commence out of utter bored-ness. As most of you know, my P6T motherboard is at ASUS HQ getting a audio issue repaired. Due to this, my mind has been going crazy, like a ADD kid without Ritalin, and my hands have been idle. Everyone knows: Idle hands are the Devil's play things. Oh goodness... what have I done....

_____________________________________________________

As you may have already guessed, the idea was to create a home server for my files. My main goal was to be able to store my movies/music and stream them on any computer in my network. Being that this is the first time I have ever attempted to do something like this; I received some help ( actually it was a lot, but I don't want it to go to their egos :P ) in terms of what to get and how to run it. So here's my special thanks in advance to the following people:

Eek: Feedback on the parts, random pieces of advice and of course, planting the little seed in my head that I needed one... Damn you Eek! (Oh, I forgot, he also gave me one of his famous webcam strips - FOR FREE!)
rockonkenshin: Feedback on the parts, ideas on how to set it up (different operating systems) and hopefully advice on actually getting it up and running.

Now that that's out of the way; on to the pictures, shall we?

(Note: as I write this (Friday night/Saturday morning) the case has not arrived yet, expecting it some time next week)

The parts that have arrived. Everything except the case.

To those that are aware of the "table situation" - this is it. My mom finally let me have it after I stopped asking her for it (women are strange creatures). It's white (as you can see), it has a big storage area (with a door), a small slot for random things (such as a keyboard) and it's perfect for my closet to hold this server. Best of all it's free.
