I have a small dog, a lhasa apso. She'll turn 17 in May.

My family is starting to think about putting her down.

She's pretty much blind and deaf (not entirely, but mostly), she gets around mostly by smell.

We've noticed that these past few days she can't go down her stairs to her dog door to take care of her business anymore. She's starting to have "accidents" all over the house.

She does have arthritis and it's really hard for her to walk and move around, but we've been giving her medicine that helps a lot. On her medicine she gets around fine, she can even jump up on the couch when she wants to. The vet says she has some kind of heart condition that makes her do this gagging kind of thing sometimes, but that doesn't seem to cause her too much grief (yet).

Idk, when is it a "good" time to put an animal down? Is she suffering enough right now? She still receives sooo much love, and loves us back... I just feel like it isn't right yet.

I guess a fear is that she'll hurt herself trying to get down the stairs to get outside, when no one is home.

Oh God,I really dread the day my little Yoshi expeirences this. He's only 2,but I love him so much,it would break my heart if I was going through this, you guys should keep your pet longer,I don't feel like its time from what you told me.Especially if she is jumping up and down off the couches and stuff with no wimpering.

Yeah, it is rough. Very painful things to think about. Don't worry though, you have a LONG time to love Yoshi before these thoughts ever have to cross your mind. :)

she really doesn't jump on the couch much at all anymore. She used to be on the couch with us ALL the time. As she got older, we put some puppy stairs next to the couch so she could get up easier. But then she started falling off the couch all the time cause she's nearly blind and whatnot (on to our hard wood floor), and she's so old and "fragile", so I took her stairs away so she couldn't get up anymore. I was afraid she'd seriously injure herself falling off all the time. She's gotten used to sitting next to the couch, but every once in a while (with a good running start) she can still manage to jump up.

Hey man.. Just spoil her as much as you can. Give her delicious meals like chicken breast, steak, etc.

You'll know when the time has come. It was the hardest day of my life when I had to put my beautiful white German Shepherd down. I layed on the floor spooning her until she took her last breath. I'm 26 years old and it still brings me to tears a few years later.

There will come a moment when you will lock eyes and realize that its her time, until then, just love her extra!
