Definetly have someone watch the dog for long periods of being away, but consider kenneling during short trips such as going to a store to get something or picking up food.. but not for those long long periods of time, as for her being too dependable the best course of action you can do is when your friend IS HOME with the puppy, don't spend every second letting it snuggle and latch onto you, send it away, let it "learn" to be independent, even when you are around, and when the dog is noticed doing something that isn't directly related to a behavior caused by the owner, you can reward that with attention.. but the main thing is making sure this puppy gets the basic exposure, socialization, and cognitive skills it needs to learn while in such a impressionable phase in it's life...
