Well when a good or product (like facebook) is being provided for free, guess what? You're the product.
Where does all the revenue come from? Selling the private information of users. Period. Advertising makes up a small amount but the rest is trafficking of information many would like to be private (despite giving it away).
As for these telecommunication companies you are absolutely right...people should be angry at them and not the US government. Why should these telecommunication companies treat the US government like anybody else and forbid them from the information?
