"Fact Checkers" were already politically biased back in the early days of Snopes. The political bias was weaponized, and many of the fact checking institutions bought by Dem "non-profits" during that timespan.

Anyone who was putting any faith whatsoever in "fact checkers" even as early as 2016 had their heads buried in the sand.

Community notes can and will also be weaponized, but for the moment at least, tends to be more acceptable.

In the end, however, why does any form of social media need ANY form of "fact check"? Everyone has a right to freedom of speech. If someone is a fool, and spouting foolish nonsense, the best thing to do is allow them to play the fool. People will come out of the woodwork to tell them precisely how and why they're a fool. No fact checks or community notes needed. All fact-checking and community notes really does is allow other people to editorialize someone's opinion, which is peak nonsense.

It's accomplishing the opposite. Applying editorial notes to people's individual posts makes them a publisher, not a platform. Which is why I want to see section 230 protections completely removed from social media publishers. Because that's what they are, publishers. They are inserting themselves into your ability to speak to your friends and family, to rather extreme extents. Imagine you go to send the link to the hunter biden laptop story to your grandmother using facebook messenger, and the link won't send, and you suddenly get an account suspension. That's not a platform. It's a publisher. Therefore, they MUST be regulated AS a publisher, and lose ALL 230 protections.

i agree with you.

but i'd only add when they did work on behest of the CIA/FBI i think it was an attempt not to get regulated. and i think now removing fact checking is also an attempt to not get regulated.

the legislature flipped as did the whitehouse, so they're changing to match. they'll do literally anything to avoid regulation like the lizards they are.

i'd love a wild west just post and respond type social, doubt twitter will ever live up to that, but i doubt id use it. too many years in /b/ seeing horrendous stuff and no desire to go back.

Community notes makes it easier to control speech, not harder. Do you think the FBI/CIA/NSA/CCP/etc. cannot simply create a million AI accounts designed specifically to utilize community notes to change the narrative to whatever they want, on literally every post they want to?

It's coming. It'll get FAR worse before it gets better, and it's 100% because social media has been allowed to operate as a publisher, while receiving platform protections. They claim they're comparable to utilities. Yet they listen to your phone calls (posts), and cut off your service (suspend or ban you) if they dislike what you say. They're publishers, and community notes has outright gifted those with control of the server power the ability to propagandize at levels never before seen.

Not saying anything you're saying is wrong, merely that it's tunnelvisioned. You haven't thought of the broader picture.

i have thought of it and recognize this new system can be astroturfed to hell. i just think corruption that we can see is easier to expose. an astroturfed community note can be screenshot and posted to all corners of the web for people to critique. however when the FBI simply makes whole topics disappear, all we can talk about is their absence. both powerful tools of control, but i like my corruption in my face not in the dark.

When there actually is no consensus then there is no truth to check against and no community note to be added either to be fair. Don't mix up "no consensus in the scientific field" with "actual idiots disagree because they want to feel smart" though. E.g. climate change is real by scientific consensus, but I am not convinced that the majority of facebook users agree, at least in some bubbles a lot of the people on jsp frequent.

given facebook's contribution to genocide in myanmar i'd think community driven efforts to discern the truth are probably the wrong direction to go in
