No, the election that really broke the country was 2000. That was the point in time when it became clear that Blue America and Red America are on diverging paths, and that the country was getting polarized in increasingly rapid fashion. The country briefly rallied around the president after 9/11, but other than that, it's been a downward spiral of ever increasing polarization, hostility and violations of norms from both sides.

Good assessment. I'd say that our partisan path really started with Gingrich vs Clinton in the 90s, but the 2000 election started a downward spiral. The 2016 election did nearly irreparable damage.

The federal government is too powerful for a civil war to take place. I'm not sure how this shakes out now, but it's going to be ugly.

Youre deflectng to a different argument because your first one was so shitty

Not deflecting at all. Obama's comments were after trumps birthed comments.

You guys started calling Obama a socialist way before democrats started fighting back.

because of the internet

rather than neighbors and family talking shit to each other about politics once or twice a year they now had access to a lot of other people

shut in grandparents angsty teens and everything between could now all meet in one place and talk non stop shit

social media boomed with all the good and bad that comes with us all being connected but really the ability was what changed

the left vs right hatred had been there for decades before that

Nope, deregulation of the media that allowed for unchecked mergers and for-profit journalism in the late 1990s.

The left always hated the right and was vicious through the media. That went back as far as can be remembered. It wasnt unique in 2000.

In 2012 the Republicans ran one of the cleanest candidates in history and the Democrats ran on a platform of trying to drag him in the mud of false allegations (binder of women, etc. ). On top of that Obama did his best to troll middle america with insults every chance he got. At that point the right understandably stopped being civil to the left and its probably never going to reverse.

Maybe he means republicans doing a service to the country by stopping Obama from appointing a SC judge.
