No, the election that really broke the country was 2000. That was the point in time when it became clear that Blue America and Red America are on diverging paths, and that the country was getting polarized in increasingly rapid fashion. The country briefly rallied around the president after 9/11, but other than that, it's been a downward spiral of ever increasing polarization, hostility and violations of norms from both sides.
