It's funny because absolutely anyone who had any level of education in the natural sciences knew this from the start. It's mosquitos through a chain-link fence. Masks absolutely do not block small particles.

Even a well-fitted N95 mask blocks only 95% of PM2.5 (that is, particles with a diameter of 2.5 microns or higher. That is literally why the mask is called N95). Viral aerosols are much smaller than PM2.5.

Initially, it was believed that covid would be transmitted mostly via droplet infection, like many other diseases. By the time it was established that aerosols are a significant vector of transmission, the whole masking thing had already taken on a life of its own. Masks had already become politicized and turned into a symbol of "taking covid seriously" and "listening to the science, doing the right thing for the greater good". There was no more place for nuance or common sense.

There's not much more that needs to be said. Covid was primarily a tragedy of humanity and secondarily a physical disease. It permanently severed trust between programmable NPCs and real humans, exposing the former to be power-hungry, bloodthirsty savages.
