The government actually owns it all, they just so gracious they let you think you own it for a short while.

For example, my Grandmother is living in the oldest house in our family, built around 1890, but if we don't get deed changed 3 or more years before Granny ultimately ends up with tons of medical bills on her way out, then we could lose it. The system is setup to let it slip away to the state/corporations, unless people are smart enough to realize the nuance rules.
