Wouldn’t it be better just to play the actual market? Which is essentially the same thing - betting on whether a stock will go up/down lol

You can, but it would be far more satisfying to make real money off it than fg. You would also be indirectly opening up the betting scope to any and all real world events, which would make the mediators' job really tough.
