Instead of clearing up to a map just clear the act. That way if you happen to go back to a different mode and you return, it doesn’t matter where the wp was. Because not all wps spawn in the same place.
Looks like this answer got the most support and is the most in-line with what I was already thinking anyways. So I'm just going to go with this. I'll use imbues/sockets whenever I find an appropriate item for it, but will only go back a difficulty to use them once I reach a new act, which ensures that I won't kill any extra monsters beyond a single-pass.
