It's not about selling the ear. If trading ears isn't against the rules you can post the ear in a trade forum and bump it every 4 hours for the entire ladder season, showing thousands of people that he lost.

If HC trading was more active it would probably be allowed but if you allowed that now you would have to scroll to find actual trades
