Hi, so about 4 years ago, I purchased one of those $600 complete AMD computers that are just really ew, but hey, I didn't know what I was doing and it work!

That computer was the Cybertron Borg-q:

https://www.amazon.com/CybertronPC-Borg-Q-Gaming-Desktop-Discontinued/dp/B00GFG1B1A

I've since upgraded the system from Windows 8 to Windows 10

And I ditched the 1gb GTX 610 that it game with (lol) for a GTX 1050 2 gb

Any recommendations on where to start to make the system just a little better, let's say with a $300 budget to start

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT1050 2GB Video Card | 24X DVD±RW Dual-Layer Drive | Audio: 7.1 Channel | Gigabit LAN Keyboard and Mouse

Expansion Bays/Slots Total(Free): 3(2) Ext. 5.25" | 4(3) Int. 3.5/2.5" | 1(1) PCI | 1(1) PCI-E x1 | 1(0) PCI-E x16 2(1) DIMM 240P

Connectivity: 4x USB 3.0 | 2x USB 2.0 | 1x RJ-45 Network Ethernet 10/100/1000 | Audio | 1x HDMI | 1x DVI 1x VGA

power supply.

If you are using cheap 450 power supply, you risk killing your system.
I use at least 650 W with good rail. Depends on your system.

a new cpu/mobo should take priority in this case, ssd doesn't actually give any performance just lets you load quicker, but with a bulldozer dual core this guy is probably getting crap performance in just about everything after it's finally been loaded into ram.

That said they arent mutually exclusive,' a small 128gb ssd is the price of a decent meal, so throw that in with the upgrades.

I would recommend a used haswell i5/i7 + lga 1150 mobo combo on ebay to compliment a new ssd, should be doable with $300 and will be far better. Look for the cpu/mobo first, make sure they are compatible (if getting a Haswell refresh, be sure the mobo you're considering has appropriate bios, contact seller if need be), then spend whatever money u have left on an SSD, 128gb or 256gb whichever you can afford. Make sure the used stuff you're getting isn't from some overseas country, that seller has good feedback, has a rock solid return policy and gg.

you can always trust shaft to give poor advice
ddr4 isn't worth getting into at this price point for mobo/ram/cpu for gaming. Haswell is on par anyway, fps doesn't lie.
