So I recently learned that virtually all wasabi (likely 100% of what I've had) is just green food colouring and horseradish. Apparently it's quite difficult and a lengthy process to grow making the supply/demand not sustainable. I read a neat article about someone in b.c. growing it hydroponic/green house style since normally what's grown in Asia is consumed locally and dried/old wasabi isn't near as good.

Has anyone had real wasabi? How's it differ from the fake? Is it somewhat close or is it more noticeable like fake banana flavouring?

It's really different. Imitation u only taste the heat. Real wasabi you still have heat (usually less) but you can taste the flavour too, and it stays in your mouth longuer too...

I heard this before. Might be the truth. Never really looked into it. I've cooked with Wasabi before but never really seen what it actually is lol
