Ninety-seven years ago yesterday, the first bombs to fall on American soil fell on the Tulsa OK neighborhood of Greenwood (known at the time as Black Wall Street), which led to the utter destruction of the homes and lives of 10,000 black Americans.

This event is frequently (and incorrectly) referred to as the Tulsa Race Riots, as the term riot was (and still is) used to assign culpability to the black residents of Greenwood in the destruction of their own homes, businesses, and way of life. A proper term for this would be an act of terrorism.

Although I am not from the U.S. I consider myself a great history fan and for a long time I read of it on a daily basis. With this in mind, I only learned of this event a few years ago. Makes sense, the whole thing was so abhorrent and indefensible that I see why virtually everyone involved decided it was best forgotten.

I only learned about this about 4-5 years ago, as well, and I'm from the U.S. (and a history buff, as well). Just shows what happens when history gets white washed.

Here's the french wiki about it:

----------

The Tulsa Racial Riot is an ethnic riot that took place in the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma between May 31 and June 1, 1921. A white American mobs attacked the residents and businesses of the African-American community of Greenwood in what is considered one of the worst incidents of racial violence in US history. Estimates range from 36 deaths according to official statistics from 1921 to 300 deaths according to the Red Cross and the 2001 final report of the Oklahoma Commission on the Tulsa riots. The riots also left 8000 homeless due to fires caused by rioters. The riot, led to the ground and through the air, destroyed more than 35 blocks of the district, at that time the richest black community of the nation. More than 800 people are admitted to the hospital and more than 6,000 blacks are arrested and detained (many of them several days).

Ya - it's pretty fucked. Nothing the US hasn't been doing to it's black citizens through more covert means ever since they freed the slaves though. See crack epidemic etc.

So you're telling me that when a minority community got too successful we killed them for it?

And people wonder why minority groups aren't in a better place today.

Then again, conservative, historical knowledge, not exactly surprising.

French history can be left as a blank sheet of paper, meant to represent a white flag.

Because they surrendered once after basically kicking the shit out of the world for a thousand years?

So sick of this ignorant racist slur. It's used all the time on this forum and it's not only reprehensible for its racism but simply inaccurate to imply the French always surrender.
