The NFL is not "the government." The NFL understands that its fan base (customers) will react negatively if they offend their fan base (customers). The NFL is well within its prerogative to ensure the financial viability of its operations. No person has a right to do bring willful harm to his/her employer without repercussion. Trump chiming in, the mainstream media constantly covering this nonsense is just bad for business. I remember catching ESPN during the football season and they would spend hours white knighting for the players.

The NFL doesn't need or want this polarizing brouhaha. The owners want to make money, not have their business become the next battleground for social issues.

Are you purposefully being autistic here? By allowing the players to publicly protest on the job they are alienating a sizeable portion of America that's your typical beer drinking sport watching Trump supporter. By telling the players not to kneel publicly they are simply squashing this ordeal, out of sight out of mind, so no they aren't alienating the other side.
