Almost nobody actually programs viruses for Linux, so you don't need it as badly as you need it for Windows.

If you are actually interested in the operating systems it's customizability versus stability. Linux is most customizable, but you can really mess it up if you do the wrong thing. Windows is the medium ground, where it can be somewhat unstable, but you can do most things to it to fix or make it worse. Apple is the other end where you're severely limited on what you can do, but it's very stable.

So take the pick. I choose windows because Apple is too restricting, but I don't have the knowledge necessary to make use of Linux to its fullest.

Windows for gaming.
Linux & OSX for everything else.

Years ago I would dual boot to get the best of both worlds
Now I don't game like before and it's easier to run windows as emulation in OSX.

According to Tom's Guide, Sophos & ClamAV are not very good antivirus:
  • Sophos scored 95% detection on Linux
  • ClamAV scored 66.1 percent on Linux

So that claim is wrong already.

Also those percentages are probably taken if Linux user is using root account. You need to be logged with root account to get your system infected.
Also a guy using linux probably knows pretty well what he's doing. Unlike windows user knows very little because the user interface is very user friendly.
Also legend claims that there are fewer viruses made for Linux.

It's false to say that you need to be logged with root account to get your system infected.
A virus can be installed in the /home/"user" folder.

In this case, it will not need super user permissions.

https://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/antivirus

In addition, with a privilege escalation system, the virus can gain full access to the computer.

The error is human, for Windows users or for linux users.

Under debian, if I remember correctly, the default account is a super user account.
