Centuries worth of rare earth elements found in Japan's EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone)

Massive deposits of rare earth minerals that could meet global demand for centuries have been found in Japan's exclusive economic zone off the Ogasawara island chain 2,000 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, researchers said.
The deposits, estimated at 16 million tons, lie at a depth of 5,700 meters about 250 km south of Minami-Torishima island in the Pacific Ocean.

Currently, China controls about 95% of the world's rare earth mineral deposits.
This find could be a global game changer for Japan and the rest of the world.

Ok Ghot, so for many people (i hope?) manganese nodules isnt a scoop.
I think i heard about it like what ? 15 years ago ... Or even more... Personally.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manganese_nodule

Anyway it has a cost to extract, and all that is sciences & geopolitics.

Not for you :p

Cool article. Just curious what are the "rare earth elements" they found? What kind?

edit: found

It was estimated that the deposits contain enough dysprosium, which is used in the production of hybrid auto motors, to last for 730 years, and 420 years’ worth of terbium, which is used in magneto-optical discs, among other things.

I'm guessing dysprosium and terbium. Nvm found it =]

Magnesium is not a rare earth element, and has nothing to do with the article. But good try. :)

Yeah, that's pretty deep, but hardly inaccessible. Hell, in 1960 the US Navy owned bathyscaphe Trieste, went down to just over 11,521 meters.
We can do a lot better these days.
From other articles I read about this deposit of rare earths, it seems they can just siphon mud off the bottom and on board the ship using acids can extract these rare earths.
It's still expensive, but it's a lot cheaper than having China control 95% of the world's deposits of rare earths.

Sending a midget sub down is one thing. Sending down a machine capable of performing industrial mining at extreme pressures is something else.

True but that midget sub went down about 60 years ago. We've come a long way since then. :)
I'm just happy that Japan will be the ones to make out in this venture. Especially considering that they are our allies and that we are in a trade war (sort of) with China.

Time for this to reverse itself...
