Been reading about solar flares and apparently a big one could act like a giant EMP that takes down the electrical grid

Don’t nuclear power plants rely on the electrical grid to keep the reactors cool? If they don’t have enough backup power then we’d have nuclear meltdowns all over the place?

If the power is ever cut off, positioned electromagnets will automatically drop control rods into the reactor, which will dampen the fission until it is inert.

We are safe in that respect. The bigger issue would be the possible $2 Trillion in property and infrastructure damage if a Solar EMP ever did occur

You simply can't handle the consequences of a power grid and electronical components destruction.

That doesn't take into account how long it takes to cool a reactor that is fully online. Just look at what happened at Fukushima.
