There should be a minimum number of years to prevent patent murder attempts I think.

GMO's should not hold a patent either, just the chemical processes to make them.

This would be my position in an ideal world, unfortunately the corporations are in too powerful of a position now and could just crush anyone and anything if this were the case.

Which corporations and what would stop generics from taking them down and then someone taking the generics down with even cheaper stuff? Patents are monopolization, they are anti-free market. They keep prices artificially high and force wealth redistribution away from the bottom up to the top.

The corporations have the money and connections to pump out cheap enough stuff that they can put any competition out of business then raise the price again.
I work for bp, our ultimate actually eats dirt, even after research costs if some one tried to produce the same fuel we could do it cheaper and faster.
If some one came up with a better fuel we could steal that idea and still do it cheaper and faster.
