I actually agree that deadlifts aren't the be all to end all of a program. You can easily work the same muscles using other exercises.

Compound movements are almost always superior and even if deadlift activates hammies more, they still contribute a lot to the back and other muscles.

That being said, I see little point in someone strictly bodybuilding doing deadlifts lol

while the back doesnt actually do any WORK in the movement (using good technique), back muscle activity is certainly not minimal in the deadlift. physical work is done by the hams and glutes but the back is contracting generally near max isometrically at heavy relative loads
