Flu shots are complicated. Basically, researchers get together and predict 4 or 5 of the strains they expect to be most likely for a given flu season. The problem with this is the flu virus mutates pretty rapidly as it moves from host to host so it's like playing the lottery in terms of the flu shot being effective.
