Game works a bit like D2 with Standard as the "non-ladder" and League as "Ladder".

If you're the type of player who wants to play "ladder" which in PoE is a 3 month League, making a character now would make it go to standard in 13 days.

Now with that said, this game is not easy. Even if people with 5000 hours played want you to believe it is. Objectively speaking, it requires a high amount of knowledge so I would highly recommend you play it on your own without following a build since as pointed out before, the ascendencies are all going to be heavily modified. Learn to play the game, learn how things work so that once the new league comes you at least know what the fuck you're doing.

/e: actually right now you can start with hc, because if you die you will be thrown to non league sc and it doesn't really matter for you in terms of getting used to the game
