I'd like to have a car that could do both. I could choose manual when I wanted, or self driving when I wanted.

Everyone being on a integrated software network that drives your car isn't risky at all...

Well, there are times when self driving vehicle would be nice. Like traveling on I-80 through Nevada for example.

/e I think they are looking at self driving cars the wrong way. They should be self driving for out in the sticks. In town, they should be manually controlled.

Sort of like airplanes. Auto pilot for the long straight crap, and manual for the delicate stuff, like landing. :)

The car would have to be autonomous.

There's really no reason to not have it automated in town. It's safer than highway.

if we leave it to individuals there will probably be a long string of car crashes and blame being shifted back and forth between auto manufacturers and car owners over manufacturing defects vs failure to maintain the vehicle properly

Why would that be the case?

The motive of this effort is purely financial. Autonomous vehicles becoming commonplace would completely eliminate the validity of their business model.

It doesn't take an expert to click a destination on a map and then sit and do nothing until they get there.

zero fucks given, i will always drive my car myself

We can only hope that one day, when autonomous vehicles are sufficiently developed, human driving on most public roads is illegal, so that those who insist on driving manually can't endanger others' lives. ;)

Self driving cars panic when a simple cone is in the road.

They're in their infancy and even then that isn't true at all. Their obstacle navigation is already very sophisticated with the help of machine vision.

self-driving cars might be a godsend to those who communte wide distances every day with their car (instead of the bus or suburban trains).

right now, driving to work by car is mostly wasted time. with a self-driving car, you could use it to eat breakfast, you could use it to read the newspaper, read a book, browse d2jsp or other popular websites on your cellphone, and so on.

for someone who spends 2 hours each day getting to work and back home (1h for the one-way trip), switching to a self-driving car might be equivalent to 1.5 hours of additional free time per workday.

Yeah the ability to travel in your own vehicle while being able to spend that time doing whatever you like will be enormously beneficial.

Yeah that's...not true at all.

Google has had several self-driving cars on the road for years. Started in...2015 I want to say? From what I've seen, the cars have been in zero at-fault accidents.

Here are a few monthly reports from 2016:

I'd be surprised if that was true for Tesla, either, considering kids at my college make self-navigating robots every year that handle cones.

Yep, if I could turn my car into a commuting office and get the first hour of work done in the morning and be able to reduce the length of my work day than I am for it.
