looks like uber doesn't like the idea of people operating self driving cars

from one perspective this looks like part of an attempt to enforce a monopoly on transportation options

on the other hand there is some merit to the idea that licensed operators with tight regulations around self driving vehicles would be a good thing

if we leave it to individuals there will probably be a long string of car crashes and blame being shifted back and forth between auto manufacturers and car owners over manufacturing defects vs failure to maintain the vehicle properly

where does pard stand on this matter?

Uber has joined forces with other online taxi and ride-sharing companies to outline what they think the future of transportation within cities should look like. And although many of the shared principles point to a positive outlook for the coming years, one, which appears to suggest outlawing privately-owned self-driving cars, is causing a stir.

ZipCar has brought together a group of companies, including Uber, Citymapper, Lyft and BlaBlaCar, to produce the Shared Mobility Principles For Livable Cities policy document. At first glance, many of the principles in the document are positive, outlining a commission to renewable energy and prioritizing the needs of people over vehicles.

However, the final principle may be cause for concern. It states: “We support that autonomous vehicles (AVS) in dense urban areas should be operated only in shared fleets.”

They should be banned, or getting regulated like fuck, hopefully...

The European Court of Justice (CJEU) ruled on Wednesday (December 20th) that the chauffeur-driven car reservation service is part of the "transport sector". As a result, EU member states can regulate it like taxi companies.

thanks :)

Self driving cars panic when a simple cone is in the road.

self-driving cars might be a godsend to those who communte wide distances every day with their car (instead of the bus or suburban trains).

right now, driving to work by car is mostly wasted time. with a self-driving car, you could use it to eat breakfast, you could use it to read the newspaper, read a book, browse d2jsp or other popular websites on your cellphone, and so on.

for someone who spends 2 hours each day getting to work and back home (1h for the one-way trip), switching to a self-driving car might be equivalent to 1.5 hours of additional free time per workday.

As a professional driver, I support autonomous cars. I am good at what I do, but that doesn't mean machines aren't/won't be better. I love the freedom of driving, but have no problem with letting the car drive if it's a good car/software setup. Maybe I'd like to have a few too many. Maybe I'm particularly tired one day.

I'd like to have a car that could do both. I could choose manual when I wanted, or self driving when I wanted.
