Anyone can get to hell and steal xp like people do in softcore, I think the key to hardcore is respecting the resists and damage reduction caps. Souls will kill you with no absorb or high lightning res. And most melee hits will take you out without damage reduction. After u get resists and damage reduction build however you want. But if u can't take a hit then don't try to be a hero. I won't go into hell difficulty without building up my resistances and gear first. I tend to nightmare cow for a long time so I have enough life and resistance charms to make it in hell. Mule lots so dieing hurts less. Be careful so u die less. Make things easier on yourself and mf nightmare until u can't find better upgrades then move on to hell.
leaching XP from random games is a good way to get tp pk'ed, or someone will open a seal at just the right time. these are things softcore players dont need to worry about, so they will make all the mistakes...
leaching quests and getting rushed from randoms puts you at a huge risk of getting PK'ed.
Thats what makes HC fun, your kinda forced to be able to progress on your own, sure you can leach XP in Baal runs if you simply by let other players jump into the TP first, and such... But HC isn't so much about the end game its about the journey.
I think your advise about dmg reduction and high res is spot on, but it's easier said then done. often you'll find that your char is doing plenty of dmg, but you really dont have the gear to progress safely, JSP helps alot for this, you can trade alot of easy to find things, then buy a few really basic things that will help out alot.
