also be aware of that you're guildleader is trying to fool alot of ppl on prices of items, so be careful if u buy items from him or taking advices from him about what items are actual worth.

I assume this is supposed to refer to rods with durability.

I though this just protected them from breaking. Does it actually have a direct effect on catching?

I think what he meant is that you won't fail as often from running out of durability which makes it easier to successfully fish. Proficiency is the property with a direct effect on speed of catching.
