Except they actually did shut down this time. The last time this happened it cost the US economy some 30 billion USD. With the big orange idiot sitting in the oval office there's a fair chance it could last much longer and cost much more this time too.

Over a million people on unpaid leave etc.

It's a big deal if you care about American citizens and their welfare.
