the ISIS supporting turkish regime is using the conflict again to "justify" their war against kurds. absolutely disgusting and our government (germany) is currently in talks about upgrading turkey's leopard tanks, which is absolutely disgraceful - especially considering the multiple german political prisoners currently imprisoned in turkey...

the world should stop negotiating with the dictator erdogan and give him the north korea treatment. unfortunately, turkey is located in a strategically important position, and despite its theocratic aspirations still considered one of the more "stable" islamic nations, so i guess that won't happen. considering their development in recent years it would be well deserved though...

that's the problem. despite our peaceful reputation (and i'm saying this unironically since i'm refering to the last couple of decades), arms exports are a significant factor of our economy and the industry's political influence is considerable. public opinion, which mainly opposes (at least that's my impression, i don't know exact figures since these issues are well underreported here) selling to questionable countries , doesn't really play a role. unfortunately we don't really discriminate at all when it comes to selling our weapon systems (to states like turkey, saudi-arabia, israel...) - and that's something basically all our parties (except the extreme left) are guilty of, even if they pretend to oppose it when it's politically convenient...

This is such a cluster fuck. We supported the Kurds against ISIS and Assad. Turkey supported Sunni Arabs against Assad and the Kurds. Russia, Iran & Hezbollah supports Assad. Eventually there was a detente between the Kurds and Assad as they focused on ISIS. As ISIS got stomped out we still support the Kurds at the cost of our relationship with the Turks. Not long ago, Russia, Turkey and Assad seemed to be on the same page about stomping the Kurds out. Now Assads regime is saying that they will shoot down Turkish jets that invade Syria's airspace, even though those jets are going to be attacking the Kurds who aren't necessarily friends with Assad.

A pretty complex web of who's friends with who but i think Russia wants to draw Turkey in it's camp so i have a feeling that Russia will broker some deal between Assad and the Turks in which they both go after the Kurds. We're (the US) kind stuck between a rock and a hard place by supporting the Kurds. We wanted some clout there but it's coming at the expense of our relationship with Turkey.
