So shut off pretty much all app tracking on my phone and got a vpn. Problem is the vpn rapes my broadband making the browsing stupid slow... there is no winning here is there?

Most VPN's are decent bandwidths, maybe your ISP is throttling the VPN?
Personally I don't care that much about the ads on my phone, it's really hard to avoid. On my pc I have NoScript so a lot of tracking is disabled.
