Andys is a wonderful choice, and better than gaze.

i just like using gaze for the old times, and stacked with lvl 15 fade the DR is good for tankiness. MDR is a really good stat as well to remain tanky.

id say with no budget concerns it comes down to Andy/treach/Reapers and Andy/Fort/Reapers. i've read the fort vs treach threads enough to know thats a tougher call than andys vs gaze.

I glanced over some of those test results and in theory treachery looks a lot better than it actually is relative to fort. I have a lot of different builds that I use to farm every notable farming locations. My experience has found that fort significantly surpasses treachery in survivability. Especially with a fast fpa based weap like reapers the impact of the 45ias is minimal compared to the 300ed. Then there's the res, hp and a lot of def.

The problem with treachery is that in the areas where your merc will actually get cursed often, ie chaos/baal, it will get cursed often enough that treachery has limited impact, chaos especially, where curses will just get spammed so often to be constantly reset.
A fortitude is easily the highest defense offering item unless you're a barbarian with shout or paladin with defiance, because the global +140% defense on chilling armor multiplies his overall defense.
But defense isn't the only way to keep your merc alive. Fortitude builds can only have 31% DR from ber/ber CoA, a guardian angel setup has 90% all resists but only caps out at 39% DR, while treachery goes up to 46% dr, and shaftstop can go 50% dr and have 1 socket to spare

How useful your mercenary defense is, is kinda debatable. A level 98 holy frost merc (1671 base d) with a perfect ber/ber CoA (399) + 100% perfect eth glitched fortitude lacquered plate (3648) + phoenix polearm would have 15438 defense when chilling armor procs, whereas with a fortitude polearm he'd have 26874 defense. Against your average trash mob blood lord in worldstone keep 3 with 5929 AR and level 82 when he's 98, that could make the CTH formula return a respective 25.3% and 16.5%. Which doesn't apply when he's running, or against autohit attacks, or spells, auras, etc. When nihlithak is spamming corpse explosions, a phoenix weapon is going to keep your merc alive longer than any other weapon, but forfeiting the weapon slot means losing a more valuable aura.

i run brs mostly atm. my personal choice is delirium helm which has confuse. can save ur and ur mercs life when tele into big croud (souls, blood lords). as armor forti (high def, life, res). when i run Nihla with char with slow killing seed i use shaft with 15/30 psn or 15/15 @ jwl. its all about personal preferences so try some setups and make ur choice. have fun. peace

Depends vs whitch mobs he will fight...

Some defence builds:

A2 Def: Doom RW, eBug Dream + eBug COH. (Eth Gaze + eBug Forty/Treachry)
A2 Freeze: eth Reaper, eBug Dream + eBug Forty/Treachry
A3 Cold: Lawbringer sword, StormShield, eBug Dream/Delirium, eBug Forty/Treachry. (can use also some extra: eth Gladiator's Bane / Guardian Angel / Shaft / Leviathan.. Gerke shield / Dream RW shield / phoenix RW shield / COA)
*He migth have optimal: Life Rep + DR + DR% + MDR + OverResist.. No Life Leech -> Make him tanky maximum possible.
A5: Lawbringer (eth Legend Sword), eBug Forty/Trechry/Duress, eth Gaze.

All meele mercs might have (optimal): DR + DR% + MDR + MaxRes (~60 overres vz light/fire convi also great) + LifeLeech + Curses (delirium, dream) + DEF.

It’s really dependent on what you want to farm.
I’m a big fan of Treachery but if your target run is too fast (no time to proc Fade) then it’s not nearly as good.

I’m using Eth Elite Insight/CoH/Delirium for P8 Vizier/Infector runs skipping CIs mostly. Ultimately, if you have Teleport it makes it a lot easier to keep the Merc alive regardless of his gear and being aware helps too.. 1 FRP > 50k gold for me.

E: Worth noting that some bosses can not be leeched and Slow in any form is much more effective than physical resistance with how boss damage to merc is calculated.

-75% for vanilla trash mobs at least
a monster with -50% damage and -50% attack speed is dealing 1/4 of the dps
but this doesn't include the effects of %ED multipliers/auras/etc and fanaticism speed and other such effects, elemental damage, poison, etc
