I have windows 7 on my desktop computer and my wifi adapter is only capable of 2.4 ghz I think. Would I just need to get a wifi adapter capable of 5 ghz or would there still be a possibility that my computer cannot connect to 5 ghz? I think it would just be the adapter that allows my computer to detect a 5 ghz connection, right?

You just need a 5ghz capable wifi card.

You're still better off running a hardline to your PC though.

Yes just your WiFi adapter and router need to be capable of 5ghz. If your router is set to put out 5ghz that network should just show up in the list of networks (it will be a separate network from your 2.4ghz network).

I'm fairly sure your mobo will not matter as long as it accepts your WiFi adapter and the adapter is compatible with 5ghz.
