looks like google is taking steps reduce the impact of websites spreading misinformation focusing on RT and something called sputnik

it's not exactly censorship but it is a step in that direction

if this is the kind of stuff they gotta do to prevent the spread of misinformation i suppose it's in the public interest ^_^

Google is to "derank" stories from Kremlin-owned publications Russia Today (RT) and Sputnik in response to allegations about election meddling by President Putin's government.
Alphabet chairman Eric Schmidt said the search giant needed to deal with the spread of misinformation.
RT has been described by US intelligence agencies as "Russia's state-run propaganda machine".
The publications said the move was a form of censorship.
Speaking at the Halifax International Security Forum, Mr Schmidt said: "We're well aware of this one, and we're working on detecting this kind of scenario you're describing and deranking those kinds of sites."
He then named two of Russia's biggest media outlets: RT, a TV and online news organisation, and Sputnik, an online media network.
"I am strongly not in favour of censorship. I am very strongly in favour of ranking. It's what we do," he added. "It's a very legitimate question as to how we rank, A or B, right? And we do the best we can in millions and millions of rankings every day," said Mr Schmidt.

I hope Russia proves it has some tricks up its sleeve to take retaliatory actions against Google
The absurd irony of tech giants pushing for net neutrality at the same time they're engaged in censorship, propaganda, narrative sculpting and anti-free speech measures is reaching critical mass.

Lol this is textbook censorship.

I have to say that there are less than a few English based broadcasts out there that cover foreign conflicts and geo political moves as comprehensive as RT. Obviously they are pro Russian but a well informed individual should have and consider all perspectives.

I can't wait for Google and Bing to put FOX on an extremely throttled internet slow lane after net neutrality is overturned. I want to watch conservatives suffer for their votes.

Censorship: the suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security.

Its definitely a suppression of their news, albeit through google's own property/site.
you could argue its a preferable private form of soft censorship.

Its not a matter of strictly trusting russia over american intelligence agencies. On some issues RT might expose an interesting truth that goes against the US govt/agency narrative.
*insert cliche about diversity and a marketplace of ideas and getting your news from multiple sources*

Google has been censoring/deranking for years.
This is not a new thing.

Deranking RT is one thing, but when they derank US sources, that's quite another.

/e To see it for yourself... just do a search for the exact same thing on Google and on DuckDuckGo
