Looking to either build a pc for around 300.00 or buy a pc & video card. Please post What you come up with :) I tried going with ddr4 but with current prices of ram, i would rather go with ddr3 and upgrade in the future since I could move some stuff to a new build in the future.

Already have a hard drive from old pc
Don't need operating system
Don't need anything besides the tower

Games im looking to play:

World of Warcraft
Dayz
Pubg
Sims 4

What i have in mind:

50.00 on ebay
Dell Optiplex 990 TowerCore i5-2400 3.10GHz 16GB RAM 1TB H/D Win7 Pro 64bit

114.00 (free shipping no tax)
EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 SC GAMING, 02G-P4-6152-KR, 2GB GDDR5, DX12 OSD Support (PXOC)

80.00
Corsair CX750 Power Supply - 80 PLUS Bronze - 750W

244.00 total

Think this would be a decent start if I use the left over 60.00 for thermal paste & a mid tower case for when I upgrade next year? Would have a decent gpu, psu, and case for a lower end custom build.

and i thought i was good at farming postcount.. that's almost twice his budget.
older optiplex's offer a compelling price/perf still, and he's not doing anything demanding.

an ssd is definitely not necessary

Yeah I would love to get something like that but I have 2 kids & usually only game an hour or two per night don't really play during the day unless kids & wife are doing something. Just using the money I get from work (Christmas bonus) and money from the wife for Christmas to go towards building. Figured I would just build up each year during tax time & still have money to do stuff with the family for the year :)

That is what I was planning to build but seems a little out of budget but I figured I would have some stuff to reduce the cost of upgrading to ddr4 next year if i get the optiplex

- power supply
- gpu
- case

Few questions:

Is the jump from ddr3 to ddr4 huge?

Would it be smart to try & find a used cpu to upgrade the second gen i5 From the optiplex instead of buying a case I won't use until next year? (Not sure how 16gb ram, i5 3.1ghz, 1050 would do) never really upgraded before

If you can, try for a 2500k so you can overclock the fuck out of it.

Youll probably want to replace the psu also

Get a locked i7 instead and drop the PSU, sell the i5. No sense buying and unlocked CPU if you can't crank the multiplier or adjust voltage.

Gtx 1050 shouldn't require external power, stock PSU should be fine.

Any chance you could link one of the i7's I should look into?

Also how well do you think the i5 would hold up for the games I mentioned?

Youtube i5 2400 followed by game name, if you're content, keep the setup. Do the same for i7 2600, it's possible gains won't be noticeable.

If you can get one of those dell optiplex's, then add this: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137124
