The card is an R9 280x that has been problematic.

I have not overclocked the CPU during its lifetime (4 years so far) and may overclock it now, if it will make the new GPU perform better.

I do plan on upgrading monitors to 144hz 1440p, potentially 4k waiting it out. But for now, 1080p 60hz.

Should I go big? or just do 1060?

Plan on buying this weekend

What games do you play?
If you play early access/AAA games, I'd get a 1070
Everything else = 1060 6gb

You definitely will want to overclock the CPU if you get a 1070.
1060, you can go either way

Your CPU should hit 4.0 on 1.35v. start there and adjust voltage down until last one before unstable in whatever benchmark you typically use (I use Aida)

1) probably going with 1070
2) Been playing with overclock and it seems fairly stable @ 4.0 @1.100v MAX temps (hwmonitor) low 80s, but usually in the 70s. Been trying to bump it up to 4.2 ghz but can't keep temps out of the high 80s/90s during prime95. Always cancel, never crash. haha. Also seems fairly low volts too, 1.15 wasn't getting crashes just high temps at 4.2

Is that kinda normal? Do you think its an airflow thing in tower? settle for 4.0? ....or think temps for 4.0 are high too

seems a little high. i'd clean the cpu/cooler head with rubbing alcohol / paper towel and apply some fresh thermal paste . what cooler is it? hyper 212?

yes, built close to 4 years ago, never have reapplied thermal paste since, can age be a factor?

it won't let me edit and update: but I switched to aida64 instead of Prime95.... and I have gone up to 44x, 1.25 Vcore, ... cache x35 1.2v , vrin 1.9v

temps haven't breached low 60s

Why is prime95 and aida64 behaving so different? Prime95 at this setting was seriously busting my CPU up to mid 90s in probably 15 minutes

Also I know I hi-jacked my own GPU buy decision thread, if required I can move this discussion elsewhere.. just figured since it got brought up here I would discuss here.

P95 vs. AIDA64

P95 just runs your CPU much harder than is necessary for say, a gaming rig.

Glad you posted this. How long of a stability test should I run with Aida64? How high should I push my cache up?

I would say about 15 mins for a quick stress test, and maybe an hour for the final stress test. Any problems should show up by then.
