Don't listen to them, an i3 is fine if you aren't going high refresh rate gaming.

also i3 in 2017 has quad core, which makes it an i5 without the i5 price tag.

New i3's, yes. The one he has will perform within a few percent of a kaby lake pentium I'd imagine, which is just fine for low end gaming these days.
Also tho, new i5's are hex core, plus more cache so still better single thread performance.

i3-4150 is not, only the newer ones are

Yep, the i3 4150 is a dual core. However, as you said the newer i3s now are actually pretty decent that I wouldn't have a prob with

One more thing, although not needed for gaming is that i3 - unlike i5 or i7 - support ECC RAM :)
