Try reseating the RAM as well. Loose RAM can cause this.

I tried putting the ram into different slots but still no answer

How many RAM dimms do you have in the system? If you have several, try only running with 1, in the first RAM slot.

Take out the vid card and the RAM. Use a small artists brush or similar to clean any dust out of the slots.
Put the vid card and the RAM back into the slots they came out of. RAM is especially touchy. I've had the RAM break contact and result in no signal to the monitor...just by walking by the computer.

We know everything monitor and cable work, because they worked with the laptop.

If you have another vid card to test with, I would try that...if IT works and the 280X doesn't work...then it's probably the vid card.

nvm

/e If things still don't work with clean slots and trying all combos of RAM sticks in slots...it's pretty much down to the vid card or the power supply.

This is assuming you haven't changed a setting on the monitor...like what kind of input it has. (cable type)

I have just tried that but still no success. I think something has broken down since the pc just stopped sending signal to the monitor suddenly when I was using it. It did not seem like a crash or freeze, just like someone plugged out the monitor.

I have tried both the slots in the GPU but no success, both the HDMI and the VGA.

Like I said above...it would be great if you had a spare vid card to test with...maybe an older one?

/e Use w/e cable worked with the laptop...make sure the monitor is SET to the right input for the cable you are using...HDMI or VGA.
There should be a menu on the monitor, and a place to choose the type of input...HDMI or VGA.

I don't have one at home, but I will try to find someone who has one to borrow.

Try to find an AMD card since that's the kind you have...won't get weird with the drivers, that way. But any PCI-E vid card should work at least somewhat.

If another vid card doesn't work, then I would suspect the power supply. If another vid card does work...then it's pretty much the 280X that is the problem.
