The most current happening of this shitstorm is with destiny 2.

I will load into a mission, about 10 seconds in, screen turns black, then momentarily comes back with grey vertical lines, then goes back to black (with backlight on) computer fans stay on the whole time, and it just stays on until I force turn it off.

VERY rarely something like this will happen while playing other games.

What does it sound like could be going wrong?

i5 4790k
R9 280x (3 gb I think)
windows 7 x64
16 gb ram

Please list all your PC components/specs, including motherboard. You can find this with a tool such as Speccy - https://www.piriform.com/speccy

Have you tried monitoring your PC components' temperature while playing games, to see if the PC overheats? Can be done with a tool like HWMonitor - https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Do you have the latest driver versions installed for your PC? As in graphics, chipset, audio, LAN, etc. ? Grey vertical lines are almost always associated with the GPU (graphics card), so do make sure the latest graphics drivers are installed.
The latest graphics driver for your system can be obtained, here: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows+7+-+64

Are the lines looking like this?

- Make sure you don't have any overclocks enabled on the GPU, like with tools such as MSI Afterburner, EVGA Precision X, etc.
- For good measure, I'd completely remove the current GPU driver installed, using a tool such as DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), then install the latest driver again when done.
- You might also want to try disabling the onboard graphics, if your motherboard allows it in BIOS. In case it's conflicting with the graphics card.
- If none of the above helps, try reseating the GPU in its PCI slot, or for testing purposes, try a different PCI slot on the motherboard.

Yes the lines are like that - they only show up on primary monitor when it happens, secondary just is black with backlight on.

I'll try those things in a bit will return

It does appear to be a relatively known problem on the R9 280X card. Found several instances of people reporting the exact same issue, on this graphics card specifically.
Unfortunately RMAing the card was the solution.
It also looks like the graphics card has had a BIOS fix released back in 2014, which you can find on Gigabyte's site for the card

Hmm... I have flashed BIOS to my mobo before, but never a graphics card...

I am also having problem figuring out which version of the card I have or bios I need.

How would I find if I need GV-R928XOC-G3D ver. 1, 2, 3 or even GV-R928XWF3-G3D ver 1,2,3 ?

Okay I found out it is GV-R928XOC-G3D ver. 1 (F31) but Gigabyte doesn't have an updated VBIOS for F31-F39..... am I basically screwed? Should I just go buy new hardware

I think I am going to just buy a 1060.

What are the chances it's not the graphics card?

If I buy a 1060 and the same crashes happen I am going to cry :(
