"how dumb my manager is"

there's your problem

have some respect

Respect is given when earned

Person lacks basic finance/accounting/excel knowledge.

pisses off other department where they have to go to me.

So tell them to go back to your manager, you don't move down a ladder to solve issues.

Sounds to me now that they're making you do the bitch work, because you'll do it instead of the manager.

only bitches do bitch work. Sabatagoue like you're raging in-game. Burn those bridges, never get a reference, and get sued in the process. Permanent solutions are definitely the answer to temporary problems, amiright?

What exactly did you do that was so amazing in Excel?
What billing system do you use? Sap by chance?
What's your role?

You can always go above your manager if you do it right

To me, you dont seem to valuable. Help me understand why you think you deserve credit for something your manager asked you to do.

Your job isn't to just do your job. It's to make your manager look good.

IMO you shouldn't go above your bosses head to a higher boss. 99% of the time it never works out how you want it to work out and ends up creating a worse situation for yourself. Bosses are usually in their position for a reason. Sometimes the boss isn't the one who is actually good at doing the work himself or herself. They are good at managing people to make sure the work does get done and handling all the business aspects aside from the actual work part, which is very difficult and stressful. You would be better off talking to your direct boss and expressing your thoughts / frustrations and seeing what can be done to make your job easier and to where you don't feel taken advantage of. Just my opinion though.

If I.T. is half competent you can't fuck them up. It would cause minor inconvenience and maybe few hours downtime.

Meanwhile you can be sued.

Do it like a fucking adult and talk with manager about your problems. If that fails, quit job like a normal adult and move on, accept this as valuable lesson.

Really depends. Op needs to have years worth of work if he's going to walk in claiming some shit.

I agree but no one is going to fight for you. If you misstep, fine.
Op going to a new company at some point anyway.

no

respect should be given to everyone (regardless of their knowledge) -- unless they have shown dismay or are threatening to you
