How do i change the associated email on a d2 account?

If that doesn't work, you can try from the battle.net site but other than that there is no other way.

Its correct
U also have to approve the email sended by blizzard itself in your email

Once it done it should be changed right away

Edit i actually think diablo2 accs dont go by blizArd site just email and d2 itself
