I'm in the same situation, except not upgrading, need to build a machine and i've set my eyes on the 8400 since the previews...
I wonder if the z370 is actually worth or i should wait for icelake and hit the real breakpoint
im only recommending coffee lake as a possible option to friends who dont even have a desktop atm and want one within a few months at most. It's Skylake with 6 cores which is pretty good but I've got a feeling we're finally getting a new arch next gen (even if it's still built on the PIII core)
even with the 2 extra cores i dont see the new i5/i7's being a worthy upgrade from older ones, especially anything already on a ddr4 platform...
I actually maybe could for people on really old hardware like sandy bridge if I had even the slightest confidence that what comes next will be the same socket. But it's just a holdover for the real breakpoint like you said.
It was still a step in the right direction though. Before Coffee Lake there was just no way i could recommend anything Intel offered to anyone while Ryzen existed.
