These form about two hours north of Minneapolis. Really neat little stone formations (called Fairy Crosses). It's one of only a few places in the world where they are found.

I plan to start a stone, rock and mineral collection

Gonna start with basics such as

Topaz
Peridot
Lapiz lazuli

Etc

I think natural formations are really cool given the lattice structure and colours

aliexpress seems to have plenty for cheap, free delivery usually too

cheers, i thought they would go too rough with home made methods, interesting
where do you order?

Nah the main trick to doing it with "home made" methods is starting with a large grit sandpaper and work your way to a small grit.
FYI ( just incase you didnt know ) , sandpaper is measured at how many grits/ sq. Inch
So 50grit sandpaper is very rough compared to 500+ ( polishing ) sandpaper.

Go to your local hardware store and try to find a pack that has all different grits or get a couple sheets of each sandpaper.
I usually did 80/200/350/500/800 , and stopped after 800. Usually I didn't get anymore noticable polish with a higher grit.

I get minerals from the place in town called BlackMarketMinerals , they do have a website and you can google them. But their website it different than the storefront.
Any place that sells rough specimens online that you trust should work though.
It's more about finding the stones you have patience and an interest in.

GL !
