Genetically speaking we're not yet evolved to deal with a food surplus in a more passive world. Our craving for high energy food is strong. So in a way, we all store up food because of our genes in combination with our environment. How that happens, is only marginally understood. In any situation we should inspire ppl to create an environment that gives lower chances of creating biological defects. Even excessive sports at younger ages can cause the pancreas to loose part of its function, making it difficult to not become obese in the future. Yet everybody participating in at least one sport, twice a week seems like a good choice. /e ahh, yes and eat less high energy food. ^^ Vegetables / fibers, resist the (genetic?) urge. tnx Bal.

Treat the disease, not the symptoms.

Get rid of food deserts, eliminate corn subsidies and decrease the bioindustry. Americans eat far too much meat on average, and far too little vegetables/fiber.

Meat has nothing to do with obesity rates.

It's purely a result of high caloric intake and crazy amounts of carbs/sugar and sedentary lifestyles.

I tend to agree that meat isn't the cause. I've had a barbecue/beer holidays for two weeks. We stuffed ourselves like madmen. Yet all came back home loosing significant weight.
I'm more against consuming meat because we can't sustain a high meat diet on a global level.

/e: sidenote: bbqs do remove a lot of the fat..

Meat intake certainly does have an impact, as it is a food high in fats and proteins and fills you up so often times you don't eat your veggies like mom wants. But you're correct that the impact of the protein content of our diets is piddly compared with the sugars, processed fats (trans & saturated), and lack of exercise.

Calories in vs calories out.

Simplistic. If you're obese it's your own fault period unless someone has a gun to your head.

People think oh I go to the gym for one hour a day now I can eat shit then proceed to cry and say exercise does nothing for them because they have a disorder. Really an hour of the treadmill burns what, 500 calories plus a bit during rest and recovery of the muscle. Some toast and peanut butter is worth that much

Fat people can't control themselves or choose not to.

I'm not saying eating meat is inherently bad, I'm saying Americans eat a disproportionately large amount of meat. Eating that much meat has a huge impact on the environment.

I'm still trying to believe that eating meat causes a huge impact to the environment.
I've been linked to studies that proposed this, but they seem to be kind of a stretch.
