I hate Lebron but he definitely makes guys around him better on the floor. Other than seeing the floor really well and being a great distributor, his effect is to relax his guys. If you know your teammate can take over and drop 45 on any given night against most defenders, it adds to your confidence and relaxation. You can take shots you might not risk otherwise. It doesn't mean guys will do too much but it means they will spend a lot of time with a buffer which allows them to flourish. When plays can just plug into their roles without a lot of pressure it can help a lot.
There was a dude I played with @ UofT from Ghana who looked like Patrick Beverley, and when we were on the floor together, we'd usually have one of us do all the scoring or have one of us defend the other team's top guard. And then everything else becomes easier. Plus you know you'll get the ball if you're playing well and you'll have some communicating all the time on defense. Most nights, even though you play hard, you know you only have to worry about a few things because other things are already going to be taken care of ... That's a bit like what Lebron had with Kyrie. Most nights they were the two best players on the floor--sometimes by a wide margin. Everyone else gets to relax. And on the Cavs, Lebron was easily the biggest part of that effect.
It takes a special player to be able to do that. The problem is when teams start to rely on someone that talented and then just sit back. Jordan's Bulls did that fairly often. He has a lot of highlights that go on for a while and basically both teams are just watching him. As pros, it's important to stay hungry and vigilant all the time. It's good to be able to relax in a way but you still have to do work.

did kobe make players better?
Yes, absolutely. But if he was missing his shots, no, definitely not. Kobe was a volume scorer and even when he was chucking 40+ almost every night in streaks, he wasn't making his guys better. There were a few great years before injuries cut him down when he was making his guys much better. Gasol had that effect, too.
