i figured it would be a bit over 1k like that at 1200

is there nothing else or no reason more to spend more than something like 1200 on a laptop?
i mean that thing does look sick

The video cards are the only difference...except for the one that has a camouflage design.
The better the vid card, the higher the price.

DO NOT get "gaming" laptops for college classes. It takes special kind of stupid or evil to recommend that for you. You'd be lucky to get 2 hours battery life out of those msi. Then you have to strangle yourself with the cord for rest of the day in classes. Unless gaming is more important to you than comfortably working on it..

DO get: Dell XPS, MS Surface Pro, HP Probook, Macbook Air/Pro, Thinkpad X1 Carbon, Lenovo T460, Lenovo X260. None of them have discrete gpu and are pretty bad at graphic intensive games... but new Intel GPUs aren't that bad as they used to be. I can comfortably play Diablo 3, HOTS, Starcraft 2, PoE, Grim Dawn, Civilization 6 to name a few. If you just play some older game you might not even need "gaming" notebook for it to be perfectly usable.
