So I have windows 7 64bit whatever it's called on my current computer but I'm planning on selling within the next week to a friend

Jw if there's a way to keep a version for myself and still have it work when I build my next pc... As I can recall there's a way to do this via thumb drive I believe? Jw if it's easy enough for a dummy to do and or if I should just Google it

you need your windows key + the ISO off of the microsoft website.

Key: start -> right click "Computer" -> Properties -> Key should be located there
ISO: Make sure to match the version you have installed otherwise it won't work. Go MSFT site and download appropriate version
You can create a bootable ISO with Rufus (can select USB in the menu)

Legally, you cannot do this, unless it is a retail license, and the drive on the system you're selling is wiped beforehand.

This is correct you will need to buy a new operating system in order to be compliant with microsoft

If this OS was shipped with the system by the OEM it is required to stay with the system

That's not the Windows key...that's the Product ID, which is a hash of the CD key and some formula. :/

AIDA64 will give you the actual CD key. It's under... software > licenses.
