They're not concerned with the past. There is a lot of money being invested in rabble rousers in order to give the illusion of dissent and to feign opposition to Trump's nationalist agenda.

It also a good way to coverup other stories that are going down in the media, such as the fact that the DNC's emails were proven to have been transmitted over the internet proving they were leaked and not hacked. ( Bye-Bye Russia narrative )

Obama and all the rest of these mayors and governors never had anything to say about the statues while Obama was in office, but now all of a sudden it's an issue? Because they know a whole lot of people broke a whole lot of laws. Anything they can do to slow Trump down and just maybe vote him out after the first term is their goal. Second term president is going to be much more ruthless.
