Out of curiousity cuz I no longer give two shits about retail servers as even 5 years old kids can play the game now and I would like to iso some gold on private servers vs forum cheese.

It's not illegal, it's merely a violation of Blizzard's TOS. Private servers might actually be illegal.

A private server is much more illegal than trading gold for fg.
A private server completely breaks the Blizzard ToS.
It's too tough for them to monitor trades on their own game though, never had any issues with Blizzard buying/selling gold on WoW xD
