To me, the same is true of any scientist who calls himself an atheist and refuses to admit there is a possibility, no matter how small, that there could be a higher power/deity. A true scientist will be gnostic or agnostic, IMO.

Atheism and adeism aren't the same. Atheism is the most obvious stance that a rational thinker can take, since it's quite easy to arrive at the fact that there is no man in the sky who cares about what you eat, who you fuck etc...

And where's your proof that there isn't?

That's the problem... Just as there's absolutely no proof that there is, there's also NO proof that there isn't. Being an absolute atheist is the lazy man's cop-out

I don't need proof, just like I don't need proof that there are no leprechauns - I just assume there are none based on the stupidity of the claim, but I wouldn't consider myself a leprechaun-agnostic. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and can be ignored otherwise.
